Designing for the Unknown: Navigating Uncertainty in Data Centre MEP Strategy

One of the most interesting challenges we’re seeing across current data centre projects is the growing level of design uncertainty in relation to future IT deployment.

Clients are rightly trying to futureproof their assets. Questions around liquid vs air cooling, rack densities, and whether deployments will ultimately be hybrid or standard are no longer edge cases—they’re central to the brief. The challenge is that each of these decisions has a profound impact on MEP infrastructure, often requiring fundamentally different design approaches rather than simple adjustments.

In practice, this can mean developing parallel design strategies to keep options open. However, the reality is that pivoting between deployment types—especially between traditional air-cooled and liquid-cooled environments—is rarely straightforward once key infrastructure decisions are locked in.

From an engineering perspective, this raises important considerations:

  • How far should flexibility be designed in, and at what cost?
  • When does optionality begin to introduce inefficiency?
  • How can we best support clients in making informed decisions without overcommitting too early?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. But what’s clear is that early, collaborative engagement between clients, designers, and operators is more important than ever. Establishing clearer decision gateways and aligning on realistic deployment scenarios can help balance flexibility with practicality.

As an industry, we’re evolving quickly—and so are the questions we need to answer. Navigating this uncertainty is not about having all the answers upfront, but about structuring projects in a way that allows informed decisions at the right time.

We see this as an opportunity to work more closely with our clients, bringing clarity to complexity and ensuring that today’s designs remain resilient for tomorrow’s demands.
